Kudos
For Cocoa Bran
HealthNews,
October 2000
Sure,
wheat bran is full of healthy, regularity-promoting
fiber, but its texture and taste leave much to be desired.
With that in mind, researchers at the University of
Toronto studied whether cocoa bran, the outer seed coat
of the cocoa bean, had similar benefits.
They found that when it comes to bowel function, cocoa
bran cereal, which is low in fat and high in fiber,
had positive effects similar to those of wheat bran.
(The prototype cereal, not available in stores, was
made by the Kellogg Company.)
A
diet containing the cocoa-scented, finely milled bran
also keeps HDL (good) cholesterol levels higher than
a diet including a low-fiber, chocolate-flavored cereal,
according to the August 14/28 Archives Of Internal
Medicine study.
