Deli Fat Traps
Shape, June 2002

Heading for a deli? Here's the skinny on six of your favorite deli sandwiches.

For comparison, keep in mind that a typical large hamburger has about 600 calories and 50g of fat.

Turkey club:
596 calories, 36g of fat
You can make it healthier by leaving off the bacon and cutting down on the mayo. Make sure it's not a double-decker sandwich--two slices of bread is more than enough for one meal.
Bologna on white with mayo:
598 calories, 48g of fat
You can make it healthier by trying turkey bologna and cutting down on the mayo Leaving the cheese off is also a good way to reduce the fat.
Ham and cheese hero:
679 calories, 29g of fat
It's mainly the size of the hero that stacks up the calories. Just eat half of it.
Chicken salad in a pita:
517 calories, 32g of fat
Ask for the pita to be stuffed with a little less chicken salad and a few more fruits and vegetables. You can reduce the calories and fat by only eating half, like the hero.
Egg salad on a kaiser roll:
611 calories, 41g of fat
It's not the eggs, it's the mayo and the overstuffing. Just get less egg salad, or make your own with lower-fat mayo.
Pastrami on rye:
469 calories, 27g of fat
You can cut the calories nearly in half by asking for turkey instead of pastrami. Be sure to go easy on dressings, such as thousand island, which are usually included in pastrami sandwiches.
