| Can’t
remember what you forgot? A new report says that while
there are many foods that help build brain power, including
blueberries and fish, a few supplements might help as
well.
Ginko:
An extract from the ginko biloba tree, this supplement
may help delay or reduce the chance of developing dementia
or memory problems long term, according to small studies.
Huperzine
(Hup-A): A compound that’s derived from
Chinese toothed club moss, it may improve memory and
mental function. It’s widely used in China and
is currently in clinical trials here to determine proper
use and dose.
Phosphatidylserine:
PS is a fat component found in plant and animal
cell membranes. Clinical trials have shown it may help
improve memory, learning, concentration, and word recall.
Acetyl-L
Carnitine: ALC is an amino acid the body produces;
it’s also found in dairy foods and red meat. A
controversial supplement, it’s being studied now.
Some studies’ results suggest that the neurotransmitter
can reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease,
but in other studies subjects did not show any slowing
of cognitive decline.
While
more research still needs to be done on all four of
these, they are all available over the counter now.
But remember that the only thing any vitamin and supplement
will treat is a deficiency. In other words, if you’re
not lacking the substance, popping a pill isn’t
going to help. If you don’t see a difference after
taking one of these supplements for three months, your
body probably doesn’t need the additional amount.
