Surprisingly Good For You
Cooking Light

Improving your eating habits doesn’t necessarily mean cutting items out of your diet—you just might want to add some back in! Recent research has shown that five foods that were once considered bad for you actually can benefit your health. (Of course, for good health, all these foods need to be combined with a wide variety of other foods and eaten in moderation.)

1.
Peanut butter: It’s high in total fat, but at least five heart studies have shown that because it’s monounsaturated fat—a good kind of fat—peanut butter can help keep arteries clear.
2.
Mushrooms: Although white button mushrooms are mainly water, they contain phytochemicals that appear to help lower the risk of developing breast cancer by limiting the synthesis of estrogen.
3.
Guacamole: Avocados also have that good monounsaturated fat, as well as lutein and other nutrients, which may help men reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer and heart disease.
4. Coffee: Go ahead, drink up—a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people who drink four to six cups a day may be reducing their risk of developing type 2 diabetes (the kind you get later in life), although researchers aren’t quite clear about what component of coffee makes that happen.
5. Eggs: They contain nutrients, including lutein, that help prevent macular degeneration (age-related sight loss), so crack a few open each week.
