The Heart Of The Matter
Circulation, February 2004

The American Heart Association recently came out with some new guidelines to help women prevent heart disease. Here’s what’s suggested:

Don’t smoke, or, if you do, quit.
Maintain or achieve a normal body weight.
Exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, fish, and legumes, and avoid saturated fat (found in butter, fried foods, higher-fat meats, etc.)
Don’t take hormone therapy or antioxidants to prevent cardiovascular disease, because recent trials have not shown benefits from these.
