Multivitamin Guidelines
UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, August 2004

Taking a multivitamin? Consider it if you...

are at least 60 years old
are a woman of childbearing age
are pregnant or breastfeeding
are a strict vegetarian
are on a diet
are a heavy drinker
don’t eat a well-balanced diet

Before you choose a multivitamin, look for a brand with the following:
a cost of only a few cents a day
“USP” on the label
100 percent of the daily value for vitamins D, B-1, B-2, B-3, B-6, B-12, and folic acid
20mcg of vitamin K (potassium)
no more than 5,000 I.U. of vitamin A
100 percent of the daily value for minerals copper, zinc, iodine, selenium, chromium
some magnesium
